Catalog Course Description: The study of the basic concepts of geology and the utilization of these concepts to develop an understanding of the dynamic earth, with individual Lab experience. 3 Cr.

More Course Information: In EAS 109 The Geologic Environment we will investigate the natural processes operating below and at the earth's surface, and the ways in which they impact our lives. This includes studies of natural hazards associated with landslides, volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, and tsunamis, as well as the geologic context for mineral and petroluem resources, glaciers and ice sheets, geologic time, plate tectonics and Minnesota geologic history. This course will also focus on building a core understanding of the process of scientific investigation and the nature of science.

Instructor: Dr. Kate Pound will teach EAS 109 in Fall 2008 and in Fall 2009. My office hours will be posted during the first week of semester.

Use of D2L: The syllabus, course schedule, and lecture slides, some course materials, reminders, quizzes, and study guides are available in D2L for students registered in the course. Registered students should be able to see the D2L course during the week prior to the start of classes. You must activate your Huskynet ID in order to log in to D2L.

Lectures/Labs Fall 2008: Tuesday and Thursday 2pm - 3:15 pm in WSB (Wick Science Building) 116.

Field Trip: There will be a Field Trip (with associated Lab exercise) on Tuesday September 30th. We will leave at 2 pm promptly, and return at or by 5 pm. Arrange to have time off work fso that you can attend the field trip. If you have classes between 3:15 and 5 pm, request to be excused from those classes.

Grades: Are calculated as shown on the Syllabus in D2L. They include Labs, D2L Quizzes, Exams, Class questions, and extra credit assignments.

Exams: There will be two exams during the semester and a final exam for this class. Make-up exams cannot be scheduled.
Exam I is on Thursday September 25th
Exam II is on Thursday October 30th
Final Exam is on Tuesday December 16th at 1 pm in WSB 116.
