Advocacy Presentations

 

Advocacy Presentation Speakers advocate a position or point of view over which there is disagreement or controversy.

Exactly what are the points of controversy vary from issue to issue, making advocacy presentation more difficult to categorize than informative or research presentations presentations.

 

Effective advocacy presentations should exhibit:

  • An appropriately focused persuasive goal or purpose for the presentation;
  • Clear organization;
  • Logical and well supported argument(s) focusing on the relevant questions of fact, value or policy;
  • Approprpiate persuasive strategies for the audience and the assignment; and
  • Effective delivery.

    Additional criteria (based on assignment)

  • Visual aids/hand-outs to clarify arguments and supporting materials and
  • Question and Answer period to follow up arguments and persuasive strategies

 

Types of Assignments--Advocacy presentation make claims about about controversies in one or more of the following areas:

  • Fact--Problem Identification
    • What is the nature of the problem or disagreement on the issue?
    • What are the facts of the issue?
  • Value --Evaluating a Problem & Solutions
    • What are the relevant values that apply to this issue?
    • What criteria should be used to evaluate policy?
  • Policy --Advocacying a Course of Action
    • What is the best policy or course of action to follow?
