EAS 380 Day 5 Content - Lifting Mechanisms

Material Covered:

  1. To get precipitation, we need
    1. Lift
    2. Moisture
      1. Expressed by precipitable water, mixing ratio, dew point
      2. Relative humidity, dew point depression only tell us how close to saturation we are
        1. Problem: capacity changes with temperature
  2. Or for a thunderstorm, we need:
    1. Lift
    2. Moisture
    3. Instability
      1. Large Lapse Rate (cooling aloft, warming in lower troposphere)
      2. High temperature in lower troposphere
      3. High moisture content in lower troposphere
  3. Module on Lifting Mechanisms from Synoptic/Forecasting Guide
    1. Maps used from NCEP Model Analyses and Forecasts
