EAS 380 Day 5 Content - Lifting Mechanisms
Material Covered:
- To get precipitation, we need
- Lift
- Moisture
- Expressed by precipitable water, mixing ratio, dew point
- Relative humidity, dew point depression only tell us how close to saturation we are
- Problem: capacity changes with temperature
- Or for a thunderstorm, we need:
- Lift
- Moisture
- Instability
- Large Lapse Rate (cooling aloft, warming in lower troposphere)
- High temperature in lower troposphere
- High moisture content in lower troposphere
- Module on Lifting Mechanisms from Synoptic/Forecasting Guide
- Maps used from NCEP Model Analyses and Forecasts
