Chapter Meetings
- March 17, 2010, Wednesday
Presenter: Bonnie Sample, MN Breeding Bird Atlas Coordinator
Program: Minnesota Breeding Bird Atlas ProjectThe MN Breeding Bird Atlas (MNBBA) is a state-wide survey of breeding birds, conducted over 5 years, with volunteer citizen scientists, who document evidence of breeding for all the different species they can find. Surveys are conducted in selected areas within every Minnesota Township so the Atlas covers the entire state. Results from this project will support local, county, state, and regional conservation planning with current, science-based data. It will also provide a baseline for monitoring future changes to species populations. We have just completed our first season and are gearing up for season 2. You will learn about how a survey is conducted and the value of this project for Minnesota and the volunteers.
- April 21, 2010, Wednesday - normal meeting location
Presenter: Dr. Karen Oberhauser
Program: Potential Impacts of Global Climate Change on Monarch Butterflies.
Monarchs, like other migratory species, require a sequence of appropriate
habitat conditions throughout their annual cycle of breeding, migrating,
and wintering. We'll learn how data collected by citizen scientists
throughout the US has informed predictions of how monarchs may need to
adapt to changing climate conditions.
- May 2010 - no monthly meeting due
to Minnesota Master Naturalist Program Annual Conference in May.
- June 16, 2010, Wednesday - normal
meeting location
Presenter: Val Cervenka, Forest Health Program Coordinator, Mn DNR
Program: The Emerald Ash Borer and Other Invasive Exotics
Presence of the Emerald Ash Borer was confirmed in Minnesota on May 12,
2009. The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources and the Minnesota
Department of Agriculture have plans in place for prevention, early
detection and rapid response. Minnesota has one of the highest volumes of
ash on forestland in the U.S. with an estimated 867 million forestland ash
trees and ash is a prominent component of our urban forests as well. The
potential economic and environmental impacts of losing these trees is
substantial. The cost of removing and replacing a single tree can range from
hundreds to thousands of dollars - how many ash trees are in your yard?
- July 2010 - no monthly meeting due
to summer vacations
