I have put up a number of photographs from Meiji Japan -- specifically photographs taken for postcards for western tourists 1870-1890.
Articles about Japan in contemporary periodicals
- "A Bozu of the Monto Sect," by Leighton Parks. A description of an American traveler's interactions with a very intelligent Buddhist in 1886 (477-481)
- The "Editor's Drawer" column from Harper's New Monthly Magazine April 1886. I reprint the second section of April's column, which describes what the editor calls "the present Japanese craze in this country," by which he means the intense popularity of Japanese aesthetic and objects (in this case, the United States, but the "craze" swept England as well). (815).
Articles about Gilbert and Sullivan in contemporary periodicals
- The "Editor's Easy Chair" column from Harper's New Monthly Magazine February 1886. I reprint the first two sections of February's column, which describes a little bit of the production of The Mikado currently in New York in 1886 and contrasts Gilbert and Sullivan's "wholesome" humor with other plays in performance at that time. (476-478).
- The "Editor's Easy Chair" column from Harper's New Monthly Magazine, April 1886. I reprint the fourth section of April's column, which expresses frustration and exasperation with Gilbert's famous irascibility and his litigiousness with respect to copyright. (804-805).
