MINNESOTA POLITICAL SCIENCE ASSOCIATION—FIRST DISTINGUISHED PROFESSOR OF POLITICAL SCIENCE
[AWARDED 11-6-10 ANNUAL MEETING UN OF ST THOMAS]
[from the program announcement] We also have something new this year, as we’ll be awarding the inaugural Minnesota Political Science Association’s Distinguished Political Scientist Award. This award recognizes a political scientist who has contributed significantly to the discipline as an educator, researcher, or practitioner during their career. ..For this inaugural year, we are delighted to be awarding the Distinguished Political Scientist Award to Professor Steve Frank of St. Cloud State University. Dr. Frank started the St. Cloud State University (SCSU) Survey in 1980, and has since played a major role in the development, administration, and analysis of over 150 telephone surveys for local and state governments, school districts, and a variety of non-profit agencies.
Steve’s keynote presentation, entitled “From Paper and Pencil to Cell Phones: Thirty Years of Public Opinion Research in Minnesota,” will highlight the survey’s journey from paper and pencil surveys in faculty offices at night to computer-assisted telephone interviewing in a campus survey lab. The presentation will also touch on trends across survey results over the years, as well as focus on recent findings from the mid-October statewide survey. Topics such as immigration, the gubernatorial election, and the annual feeling thermometer will be discussed.
During his career, Steve has been chair of the SCSU Department of Political Science, president of the SCSU Faculty Association, and president of the Minnesota Political Science Association. For 8 years he served as a council person for the city of St. Joseph.
After years of not able to show my actual picture due to the 1996 Communications Decency Act and various web guidelines, I am now able to do so. During this time I had to use an artist's rendition where I am the one in the middle. [drawn by a Washington State Student around 1972]

In Honor of two of my
Larry and Rob
Larry served two tours in Vietnam (101st Airborne and other units).
Below, the late U.S. Senator Scoop Jackson while visiting troops
in Vietnam presented Larry with the WW II paratroop wings worn
by our stepdad.
Our stepdad was a coronel in the 101st Airborne during WWII.
Larry had a lifetime disability due to his service and passed 6-10.
Larry is cited in a book about his friend Sergeant Ronnie Hooper
Just before Larry’s death he was told by his friends that a new VA
hospital might be named after Sgt. Hooper. Something he had
worked on with others for a long time.
Rob was a promising Seattle musician and poet. At first he didn’t
experience direct combat in Vietnam but I learned he was assigned
to a navy river minesweeper. He was very fragile. He lived in a
San Francisco commune after his Vietnam tour and then died
alone of a heart condition in San Francisco.
Barbara and Steve were 30 year Viking
Season Ticket Holders &are 29 year SCSU Basketball Season ticket holders. As of 6-12 we suspended our Viking season tickets not because of their record but the combination of older legs in a stadium not elderly friendly, not wanting to sit outside in Dec. etc., and travel have put this activity on hold. We are also attending more and more SCSU hockey games but have a steep learning curve.
