must purchase and bring to each class the text and accompanying workbook Counterpoint, 4th edition, by Kent
Kennen. The text is available at the bookstores serving the university
community and at online retailers.
MATERIALS: Students
must provide appropriate media for archiving and presenting their work.
COURSE OBJECTIVES
The student will
develop skills analyzing and writing polyphonic music in the eighteenth century
Western musical style.
ASSESSMENT
The student will
demonstrate mastery of the above objectives in the form of weekly assignments,
in-class assessments, and a final project. The assessment materials will
include analyses and compositions. All written musical work must be properly
notated using professional music notation software. Assignments prepared out of
class will be evaluated with notation worth 20% of the grade. There is no final
exam scheduled for Finals Week, the exam time will instead be devoted to other
purposes.Final Exam time: Friday 16 December 2005, 7.30 - 10.00 am.
Assessment materials will be weighted as follows in determining the final
grade:

Grade Scale (+/-

A = clear mastery of all material in work
B = above average work
C = average work
D = minimally acceptable work
F = unacceptable work
WITHDRAWAL
Consult the
student handbook regarding the University policies concerning withdrawing from
a course.
INCOMPLETES
Incompletes are
awarded only when a calamity or major illness prevents you from completing the
term's work on time, and will be awarded only if you have a reasonable prospect
for passing the course (based on your record at the time you request an Inc.).
If you receive an Incomplete, you must prepare on your own any missed
assignments or quizzes, and MUST FULFILL THE INCOMPLETE THE FOLLOWING SEMESTER.
If you do not fulfill the Incomplete within one quarter, you will automatically
receive an F grade for the course. None of the scores you earned prior to the
Incomplete will be erased, and will count towards your fulfillment of the
Incomplete.
