COURSE DESCRIPTION

Introduction to computer-based technology encountered in the field of music and to various pedagogical and creative applications of this technology. This course provides the student with the skills necessary to further explore music technology and its applications.

TEXT AND MATERIALS

Readings and activities will be assigned from materials available via Coursefiles. Students must provide headphones with an 1/8" (mini) stereo plug.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

The student will:

·       become familiar with how a computer operates (5%)

·       become familiar with computer terminology (5%)

·       become familiar with the terminology of music technology (10%)

·       become familiar with the potential of the internet and World Wide Web (Web) as a music resource (5%)

·       learn basic MIDI theory and applications (5%)

·       learn how to devise and use a MIDI network (5%)

·       learn the rudiments of a MIDI sequencing application (20%)

·       learn the rudiments of a music notation application (20%)

·       learn the rudiments of acoustics (5%)

·       learn the rudiments of digital audio recording, editing, and mixing using a digital audio workstation (20%)

ASSESSMENT

The student will demonstrate mastery of the objectives by completion of weekly assignments. There is no final exam.

Grade Scale:

A = clear mastery of all material in work

B = above average work

C = average work

D = minimally acceptable work

F = unacceptable work
