Course Objectives
        Define and describe instructional development, its uses, relevance, and roots.
        Examine, explore, and explain the foundations for instructional development based on media and instructional theory.
        Identify instructional problems and needs using needs assessment and learner analysis tools, and evaluate those tools in terms of utility and theoretical background.
        Relate theory to instructional strategies, objectives, and media format selection.
        Design learning experiences systematically, acknowledging learner characteristics, in order to meet specific instructional objectives.
 
Course Requirements
        Readings from the textbook.
        Attendance at all classes.
        A position paper on a learning theory or topic.
        An oral presentation based on the position paper.
        A series of in-class activities covering components of the instructional design process.
        A series of assignments covering the instructional design process.

The Systematic Design of Instruction by Walter Dick and Lou Carey, fifth edition.

Grading

All assignments are expected to be completed on time. This is particularly important in this course because each assignment builds on previous work. Ten percent of the score may be deducted for each business day any assignment is late. No assignment will be accepted more than three days past its due date without special prior arrrangement. Grading criteria for each assignment will be distributed with the assignment. All assignments, unless otherwise stated, will be submitted through the Desire2Learn course management system or through the HuskyNet e-mail system, either in the body of the message or as an attachment. Rich Text Format (.rtf) and Microsoft Word (.doc) are the only acceptable file formats.
 
The final grade in the course will be determined by the following formula:

Attendance
You are expected to attend all classes. Each absence after the first one will result in the reduction of your final grade for the class at the rate of five per cent per absence.
